A contraction stress test in which uterine contractions are stimulated by intravenous infusion of oxytocin.

Labor is simulated by giving a dilute concentration of I.V. oxytocin and simultaneously monitoring uterine contractions and fetal heart rate. The character of the response is assessed by the physician in order to determine whether or not the fetus can withstand the stress of labor.
