Originally, the name given to a multiple mirage phenomenon often observed over the Straits of Messina and supposed to be the work of the fairy (in Italian: fata) Morgana; later, it was applied to any impressive multiple mirage.

Les Fata Morgana sont des combinaisons exceptionnelles de mirages supérieurs et inférieurs, où l'image d'un point est un segment vertical. Ces mirages confèrent à un horizon légèrement irrégulier l'apparence d'un paysage rempli de tours et de parapets et sont à la base de nombreuses légendes.
