Branche de la chimie étudiant les mécanismes réactionnels dans des intervalles de temps de l'ordre de quelques femtosecondes (1fs = 10 [puissance -15] s).

CONT

La femtochimie permet de suivre pratiquement en continu toutes les étapes intermédiaires d'une réaction chimique, et en particulier la formation d'espèces transitoires très instables appelées «complexes activés». On utilise pour cela des lasers dont les impulsions créent des espèces intermédiaires très réactives, d'une durée de vie n'excédant pas 200 fs, qui sont ensuite sondées par une deuxième impulsion laser. On accède ainsi aux propriétés des complexes activés.
