The disease is so named because infected leaves on very susceptible trees will suddenly turn brown, appearing as though they had been scorched by fire.

Erwinia amylovora, agent responsable de la brûlure bactérienne, hiberne sur les pourtours des chancres. Au printemps, au moment où les arbres sortent de leur dormance, certains de ces chancres deviennent actifs et produisent des bactéries qui peuvent se propager aux fleurs ouvertes et aux pousses tendres.
