Ces incendies qui couvent sous la surface en hiver sont parfois appelés «feux hibernants» ou «feux zombies». Ce sont des incendies qui se déclarent pendant une saison, couvent pendant les mois d'hiver sous la neige et réapparaissent au printemps avant que la foudre et les incendies d'origine humaine ne se manifestent à nouveau. Souvent, ils ne sont visibles à l'œil nu que par de petits panaches de fumée qui s'élèvent dans le ciel hivernal.
