Failure of a firearm to function properly.

Three different kinds of malfunctions are recognized: 1. Jam or stoppage. Failure to feed, chamber, lock, fire, extract or eject a cartridge or cartridge case due either to faulty ammunition, a dirty or improperly maintained firearm, progressive fouling, insufficiency of gas, an empty magazine or a mechanical failure. 2. Mechanical failure. Failure or breakage of a part causing the firearm to cease firing or fire after releasing the trigger. 3. Complete failure. Due to poor design of the firearm or of parts, or to its inherent lack of accuracy.

During inspiration, the force developed by the contracting muscles of inspiration meets progressively increasing (inward) recoil forces from the combined expansion of the lung and chest wall. Furthermore, because shortening muscle fibers generate progressively less force, inspiration finally ceases at that volume (total lung capacity) at which the weakening inspiratory muscle forces can no longer overcome the increasing forces required to expand the lungs and chest wall.
