Down-the-hole drilling is air percussion type (for large-diameter blast holes) with the reciprocating pneumatic piston placed in the drill tools close to the bit for minimizing energy losses.

Perforation fond-de-trou. Les exigences croissantes de rendement dans le forage en gradins conduisent à l'emploi de plus en plus répandu des grands diamètres de forage. La foration percutante classique est pratiquement limitée à un diamètre d'environ 4" (...) mais les marteaux fond-de-trou permettent d'obtenir des diamètres beaucoup plus grands. Un marteau fond-de-trou permet également de forer des trous plus droits qu'un marteau hors-trou, même dans des roches fissurées ou endommagées.
