Le forçage par le CO₂ est le plus important contributeur au forçage anthropique au cours de l'ère industrielle. Ce forçage total provenant des activités humaines peut être comparé au forçage naturel provenant de la fluctuation des éruptions volcaniques et de l'irradiation solaire.
