Map and Chart Data Interchange Format. MACDIF is a comprehensive interchange standard orientated to the telecommunications environment. It handles both topographic map and hydrographic chart data and has been proposed as a basis for both national and international standards. MACDIF is built upon a number of other standards; an important on being ISO's Open System Interconnect (OSI), which provides a layered architecture for data communications. Project was initially sponsored by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Five Canadian Departments including the Canadian Hydrographic Service, and the United States National Ocean Service.
