Formule de structure : Dès que l'on eut la notion de valence des éléments, on s'ingénia à représenter les substances minérales d'abord, par des formules développés [structural formulas] au lieu de s'en tenir aux formules brutes; p. ex : NH3 devient H-NHH, les hydrogènes étant écarés les uns des autres de 120 degrés C. C'est probablement en chimie organique que les formules de structure acquièrent de l'importance; elles servent à expliquer les cas d'"isométrie", c'est-à-dire des substances ayant la même composition contésimale et la même grandeur moléculaire, mais qui présentent des propriétés chimiques et physiques différentes.
