A fireball which sometimes appears after a lightning flash. Its diameter is usually between 10 and 20 cm and rarely attains 1 m. L'éclair en boule ou foudre globulaire est un autre type, plus rare, de manifestation lumineuse associée à un orage. Il apparaît sous forme d'une boule lumineuse bleuâtre ou orangée, de quelques dizaines de centimètres de diamètre, immobile ou à déplacement lent, ne paraissant dégager aucune chaleur sensible. Ce phénomène, encore mal expliqué, d'ionisation intense de l'air a été observé à maintes reprises soit à l'extérieur, soit dans des pièces fermées, soit encore dans des aéronefs.
