Ce n'est pas un orage qui est à l'origine de ces éclairs mais un phénomène rare appelé foudre volcanique et qui se produit uniquement dans le cas des éruptions dites explosives. Les particules de cendre et de poussière projetées par le volcan sont très chaudes et chargées d'électricité. Le contact entre les charges positives et négatives provoque la formation de champs électriques et magnétiques. La tension y est si forte que l'électricité statique finit par se libérer en formant des éclairs.
