D'après le Regroupement provincial des maisons d'hébergement et de transition (Québec), le mot «refuge» est très général et peut par conséquent s'appliquer à tout lieu qui permet d'échapper à un danger. Dans le contexte de la violence au foyer, ce terme est synonyme de «maison de transition». Il est à noter aussi qu'il existe deux types de refuge : des maisons familiales avec des chambres à coucher individuelles («maison d'hébergement») et des «centres d'accueil» où on retrouve des dortoirs.

OBS

Le terme «refuge d'urgence» a l'avantage d'être plus général; il peut s'appliquer à plusieurs types de maisons ou de centres d'hébergement.
