Dans le fractionnement par élution, au lieu d'utiliser un agent désorbant, on met en œuvre un composé liquide, l'agent éluant, qui présente une adsorbabilité plus faible que celle des constituants du mélange. Les trois composés sont alors entraînés par le courant d'éluant avec des vitesses d'autant plus petites que leur adsorbabilité est plus grande. Très performante, cette opération de fractionnement est utilisée classiquement en chimie analytique fine.
