Les bobines induisent des courants de Foucault dans le disque. Ces derniers induisent à leur tour un flux magnétique induit. Il s'ensuit la création d'une force sur le conducteur (partie du disque parcourue par les courants de Foucault) et d'un couple sur le disque qui entre en rotation. Le couple de freinage est en rapport avec la vitesse de rotation du disque.
