Dans le premier cas, on observe une très grande variété de structures suivant lesconditions de la source, mais il est difficile de former en abondance des fullerènes endoédriques (atome de lanthane à l’intérieur de la cage) ou des hétérofullerènes (lanthane en substitution). Lorsque des fullerènes sont formés, l’atome de lanthane [symbole chimique La] est à l’extérieur (exofullerènes). Dans le deuxième cas, les spectres de masse sont en faveur de fullerènes endoédriques ou d’hétérofullerènes. Les agrégats sont ensuite déposés sur des surfaces et leur structure, ainsi que leur éventuelle oxydation, sont étudiées par XPS [spectrométrie photoélectronique X]. On observe une bonne corrélation entre la phase gazeuse et la phase supportée. Dans le cas des échantillons de la première série (exofullerènes), le lanthane est oxydé, ce qui est assez normal. En revanche, pour la deuxième série, le lanthane n’est pas oxydé et les spectres XPS sont en faveur d’hétérofullerènes. Cependant, il s’agit d’un résultat global sur tous les agrégats produits dans la source, et on ne peut pas exclure la présence d’endofullerènes. Le tri en masse des agrégats avant dépôt pourrait apporter des informations complémentaires.
