La gale d'été se manifeste chez les chevaux et les ânes comme une dermatose prurigineuse affectant principalement la zone de la crinière et de la queue mais également la ligne du dos. Elle se caractérise par des lésions croûteuses, excoriées avec pertes de poils liées au prurit. Les chevaux peuvent également souffrir de dermatite atopique et/ou d'allergie alimentaire avec des lésions souvent induites par le prurit. Ils présentent également la particularité de développer rapidement des lésions d'urticaire.
