The Variants of Concern Leadership Group (VOC LG) and associated Scientific Advisory Council (VOC SAC) were established by Health Canada in February 2021 to support the Government of Canada's variants of concern strategy and rapidly scale up surveillance, sequencing, and research efforts of new and emerging variants. The Leadership Group was co-chaired by the Deputy Minister of Health and the Executive Vice President Science and Research of the University Health Network.

En février 2021, Santé Canada a mis sur pied le Groupe de direction sur les variants préoccupants (GD sur les VP) et le Conseil consultatif scientifique sur les variants préoccupants (CCS sur les VP) afin d'appuyer la stratégie du gouvernement du Canada sur les variants préoccupants et d'intensifier rapidement les efforts de surveillance, de séquençage et de recherche sur les variants nouveaux et émergents. Le Groupe de direction est coprésidé par le sous-ministre de la Santé et le vice-président exécutif, Science et recherche du Réseau universitaire de santé.
