«Gencod» est l'expression française de la symbolisation européenne, connue sous le nom de «EAN» (European Article Numbering). Cette symbolisation a été conçue dans un esprit de coopération internationale de telle sorte que le système EAN soit en harmonie parfaite avec son ancêtre américain UPC (Universal Product Code). Une seule différence, le système américain ne comprend que douze chiffres. Il en a fallu un supplémentaire pour l'Europe, destiné à différencier les pays.
