Les «earthships» ou «géonefs» en français sont nés de l’esprit innovateur [d'un]architecte américain [...] durant les années 1970. Partant du principe que les habitations se doivent d’impacter au minimum l’environnement, l’architecte a imaginé une méthode révolutionnaire. Ainsi, les maisons sont construites à partir de matériaux recyclés (pneus, canettes en aluminium ou bouteilles en verre) et de matériaux au bilan carbone nul comme le bois ou le torchis. Outre l’utilisation de matériaux recyclés, ces maisons ont la particularité d’être autosuffisantes en termes d’énergie, d’eau, de régulation thermique et, dans une moindre mesure, de nourriture.
