Record 3 1997-12-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Xylology (The Study of Wood)
DEF

A lengthwise separation of the wood that usually extends across the rings of annual growth and commonly results from stresses set up in wood during seasoning.

DEF

A defect found in logs that have been exposed to sun or wind for a long period of time. Sun dries out the wood, causing deep checks on the ends of the log. Heart check, caused by wind, is a radial split along the rays that pass through the center of the log. Weather check is found in logs cut from dead trees. Like sun and wind checks, weather checks are splits in the log, but they are likely to be deeper than the other two.

OBS

check; seasoning check: terms standardized by ISO.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plywood
  • Wood Industries
DEF

Separation of the fibres in an outer ply which does not start from an edge, which does not always extend through the whole thickness of the veneer, and which does not allow the underlying ply to appear.

CONT

Plywood that is exposed, unprotected, to severe conditions of moisture or dryness will eventually develop open cracks or "checks". Checking can be reduced by sealing the edges of panels prior to installing them to minimize moisture absorption, and by using a priming coat or resin sealer on the surfaces.

OBS

check: Term standardized by ISO.
