Gestalt est un terme allemand - et c'est pourquoi on le prononce «Guéchtaltt» (à l'allemande) et on l'écrit généralement avec une majuscule, lorsqu'il est employé comme substantif (comme tous les noms communs en allemand). Ce mot est parfois traduit par «forme» (ainsi : Gestalt-Théorie = «Théorie de la forme»), mais il s'agit en réalité de quelque chose de beaucoup plus complexe, qu'aucun mot ne traduit exactement dans aucune langue.
