Les glaciers vêlants. - On nomme ainsi les glaciers dont les dernières longueurs sont soulevées par la poussée d'Archimède. La langue terminale flotte et la pente de sa surface devient très faible. Le glacier («calving glacier») vêle, des icebergs s'en détachent. [...] Les glaciers vêlants ont un comportement atypique dans lequel leurs avancées et reculs sont sous la dépendance du vêlage terminal plutôt que des fluctuations climatiques. Alors que la plupart des glaciers sont actuellement en régression, c'est l'inverse dans le cas des glaciers vêlants. Le glacier Hubbard est un bon exemple de ce type de glaciers; s'il continue à avancer, il obturera l'entrée du fjord Russel et créera le plus grand lac de barrage par un glacier des temps historiques sur le continent nord-américain.
