On y observe une surface de rupture très nette le long de laquelle les matériaux impliqués dans le glissement de terrain se déplacent au-dessus de matériaux que le phénomène n'affecte pas. Le diagramme montre également que la surface de rupture s'étend sur une profondeur considérable de sorte qu'un glissement de terrain ne saurait être considéré comme un phénomène superficiel.
