D'inspiration nord-américaine, la goélette semble avoir pris naissance au XVIIIe s. sur la côte atlantique. La goélette franche ou latine n'a que des voiles auriques. Dans la seconde moitié du XIXe s., on a construit des goélettes à trois mâts, baptisées "trois-mâts latins" par les marins français, puis à quatre, cinq et six mâts, et d'un tonnage de plus en plus considérable.
