Comment sont formés les nuages de convection? L'air proche du sol est chauffé par le soleil et il se dilate, s'allège et s'élève. La bulle d'air chaud monte alors, entraînant avec elle l'humidité du sol. Plus l'air s'élève, plus il se refroidit. À un certain moment, la température atteinte ne permet plus à l'humidité de rester sous forme de vapeur invisible (c'est la température du point de rosée). L'humidité se condense alors en gouttelettes d'eau ou en cristaux de glace pour former le nuage. La base du cumulonimbus paraît plate; c'est à ce niveau (celui du point de rosée) que le nuage commence à se former.
