Le gradient du contraste local au voisinage d'un pixel d'une image numérique peut être calculé de deux façons principales appelées : - gradient normal défini comme la différence entre la plus forte et la plus faible des intensités observées sur un voisinage comparé d'un pixel et de ses quatre plus proches voisins; - gradient spécial défini comme le maximum des cinq valeurs obtenues à partir des douze plus proches voisins.
