L'accentuation des traits nordiques ne se fait pas uniformément au fur et à mesure que l'on s'éloigne des régions de base (partie méridionale des pays froids). Au Canada, c'est le Nord-Ouest qui possède le gradient nordique le plus élevé : en quelques centaines de km, la forêt du bas Mackenzie fait place au pack polaire permanent.
