Pour des régions terrestres de latitudes Nord et Sud inférieures à 71,7°, ce système est constitué d'un canevas de points qui indique la disposition nominale des centres des couples de scènes SPOT pouvant être obtenues dans la configuration dite instruments jumelés en visée verticale. Au-delà de ces latitudes, la grille de référence SPOT est basée sur un découpage par triangles quasi équilatéraux (de l'ordre de 26 km de côté).
