An informal transatlantic council of influential bankers, economists, politicians, and government officials founded in 1954 and that meets once a year to discuss world events.

OBS

As the group has no official existence, the term cannot be considered official. However it is largely used in the media and attested in the Encyclopædia Britannica.

The group is named after the Dutch hotel in which it held its first meeting.

Groupe d'influence supranational fondé en 1954 constitué de personnalités du monde des affaires et de la politique choisies par cooptation et qui discute de toutes les grandes questions qui agitent le monde occidental.

Le groupe ne publiant aucun document officiel auquel l'on puisse se référer, il n'existe pas d'appellation officielle. Toutefois, les termes «groupe Bilderberg» et «groupe de Bilderberg» (avec majuscule ou minuscule à l'initiale du terme «groupe») sont largement attestés dans la presse et les ouvrages spécialisés.

Le groupe tient son nom de l'hôtel hollandais où il se rencontra pour la première fois.

[Des réunions du groupe], on ne connaît ni l'ordre du jour, ni les compte-rendus. Les participants [...] sont tenus au silence et ne doivent pas prendre de notes au cours des réunions [...]. La seule chose dont les médias soient informés, c'est la liste des participants.

L'on observe un certain flottement s'agissant de la graphie (majuscule/minuscule à l'initiale du terme «groupe»), l'usage semblant privilégier la graphie sans majuscule. En vertu des règles régissant l'usage de la majuscule, la variante sans majuscule initiale au nom commun «groupe» revient à considérer que ce dernier élément ne fait pas partie intégrante du nom propre. Cette variante de l'appellation s'apparente aux dénominations de clubs de réflexion politique informels tels le club Les Européens, le club Génération française.fr ou le club Politique Autrement. Pour sa part, la graphie avec majuscule (Groupe) est calquée sur celle des comités, groupes et clubs constituant des organes internationaux officiels tels le Comité de Bâle, le Groupe des Sept et le Club de Londres.

OBS

Par métonymie, ce terme est parfois désigné par celui de «Conférence de Bilderberg».
