The giant slalom is a cross between downhill racing and special slalom. The course is longer than for the slalom, and the gates are wider (4-8 m) and farther apart. There must be at least 30 gates. Men race on a course that has a vertical drop of from 250 to 500 metres, about twice the drop of a slalom course.
