L'horizon artificiel permet au pilote de connaître immédiatement et automatiquement la position de son avion. Dès 1926 une équipe d'ingénieurs allemands étudie le problème de l'horizon artificiel. L'idée étant de placer sous les yeux du pilote un horizon artificiel matérialisé par un gyroscope pendulaire, qui renseignait sur l'attitude réelle de l'avion. Cependant le gyroscope vertical utilisé, soumis à des actions extérieures, ne décrit plus la verticale. En 1929 les Allemands créent le gyrorector. Le gyroscope sert désormais à stabiliser la position du pendule, grâce à sa liaison avec un moteur électrique qui corrige les mouvements du pendule. Le gyrorector est équipé d'un niveau à bille pour le dérapage de l'avion.
