En janvier 1972, pour éviter toute confusion avec le Staffordshire-Bull-Terrier qu'on était sur le point de reconnaître officiellement, l'American Kennel Club décida de changer le nom de la race pour Staffordshire-Terrier américain. Il s'agit du dernier d'une série de noms donnés à cette race au cours des années: Terrier Yankee, Terrier Pit Bull, Half and Half, et Terrier Bull américain.
