La prolactine est une hormone protéique constituée d'une chaîne de 198 acides aminés, de poids moléculaire voisin de 23 000 et dont la migration électrophorétique est distincte de celle de l'hormone de croissance humaine (HGH). Elle forme avec l'HGH et l'hormone lactogène placentaire (HPL), encore appelée hormone chorionique somatomammotrophique (HCS), un groupe de molécules apparentées, partageant certaines propriétés communes à des degrés divers, du fait de la similarité de certaines de leurs séquences d'aminoacides.
