La recherche d'une hélice susceptible d'un rendement satisfaisant, dans les conditions d'utilisation extrêmes que constituent le régime lent succédant au décollage et le régime rapide correspondant au vol à vitesse maximale, a conduit à réaliser en premier lieu une hélice à deux positions. Au décollage, on utilise une position de pales correspondant à un faible angle de calage, donc à un petit pas. En vol, on utilise la seconde position correspondant à un angle de calage élevé, donc à un grand pas.
