In 1998, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and Statistics Canada launched the Canadian Initiative on Social Statistics (CISS) to promote research and training in the application of social statistics. A Task Force studied a number of broad issues concerning the uses of large-scale quantitative databases (primarily those of Statistics Canada) and reviewed the barriers that hamper or prevent full utilization of such data.

En 1998, le Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines (CRSH) et Statistique Canada ont lancé l'Initiative canadienne sur les statistiques sociales (ICSS) afin de promouvoir la recherche et la formation appliquées aux statistiques sociales. Un groupe de travail a étudié de nombreuses questions générales touchant l'utilisation de grandes bases de données quantitatives (principalement celles de Statistique Canada) et examiné les obstacles qui nuisent à l'utilisation complète de ces données.
