Launched in the United States in 1976, Human Rights Internet (HRI) has been based in Ottawa since 1990. HRI was originally known as Internet: The International Human Rights Documentation Network. Its primary role is to serve the information needs of international scholars, human rights activists, asylum lawyers and organizations via its extensive documentation centre and databases. These include information on thousands of human rights organizations, bibliographic abstracts, funding bodies, awards, education programs and children's rights.

Créé aux États-Unis en 1976, Internet des droits humains (IDH) s'est établi à Ottawa en 1990. Au départ, IDH s'appelait «Internet : réseau international de documents sur les droits humains». Internet des droit humains a essentiellement pour rôle de pourvoir aux besoins d'information d'universitaires, de militants des droits de la personne, d'avocats de demandeurs d'asile et d'organisations du monde entier, en mettant à leur disposition son centre de documentation et ses vastes banques de données. Celles-ci contiennent des résumés bibliographiques, des renseignements sur des milliers d'organisations de défense des droits de la personne, d'organismes de financement, de prix décernés et de programmes d'éducation, ainsi que de l'information sur les droits des enfants.
