Most of the bulbous irises (so called because of their great popularity in eighteenth-century England) are derived from this bulbous Xiphium species native to Spain. It grows to 30 in (75 cm), with lance-shaped, mid-green leaves. In late spring, it bears purple-blue or white 4 in (10 cm) flowers.

Bulbe assez gros. Feuilles rubanées, canaliculées. Inflorescence de 40-60 cm, non ramifié. Bractées vertes, tube du périanthe très court. Fleurs très grandes. Sépales à onglet court et labelle grande, largement orbiculaire, réfléchi, bleu foncé.

Identification : 25-70 cm. Feuilles allongées, plus hautes que la tige fleurie. Fleurs bleu foncé, tachées de jaune, groupées par 2. Floraison : de juillet à septembre 300-2 200 m, sur prairies et pelouses. Cet iris ne vit que dans les Pyrénées. On le cultive parfois dans les jardins comme plante ornementale.
