La Journée du chandail rose a été lancée la première fois en 2007 à Berwick, en Nouvelle-Écosse, au Canada, lorsque David Shepherd, Travis Price et un groupe d'étudiants ont décidé de défendre un jeune qui se faisait intimider parce qu'il portait un chandail rose. En guise de solidarité, plusieurs de ses pairs se sont présentés à l'école le lendemain en portant des chandails roses.
