In trigonometry, we distinguish sines and cosines, secants and cosecants, tangents and cotangents, and the arcs of a circle for which a trigonometric line is given.

Une [des] grandes idées [des géomètres] fut de se servir des arcs plutôt que des angles pour effectuer leurs mesures. Ces arcs de cercle ont pour centre un sommet du triangle et sont compris entre les côtés se rapportant à ce sommet. Ces considérations menèrent tout naturellement les géomètres à remplacer les arcs par les segments de droites dont ils dépendent. Ces segments s'appellent les lignes trigonométriques.
