  • Lasers and Masers
  • Advanced Technology Weapons
CONT

Laser weapons generate intense beams of light that can focus on a target a considerable distance away.

CONT

A variety of antisatellite weapons could destroy, blind or jam enemy satellites. ... Lasers might work best, because by blinding rather than destroying satellites, they would not fill lower Earth orbits with debris that other spacecraft might run into.

CONT

Essential elements of a laser weapon are the high-energy laser-producing system and the beam control system which aims the laser beam at the target and focuses the laser on it.

OBS

laser weapon; LW: designations standardized by NATO.

Domaine(s)
  • Masers et lasers
  • Armes de haute technicité
CONT

OBS

arme laser; LW : désignations normalisées par l'OTAN.

DEF

A short-lived radioactive chemical element which constitutes the eleventh transuranic element and the last member of the actinide series of elements found in Group 3 of the period table, which has the atomic number 103 and which is produced by bombarding californium with either boron 10 or boron 11 nuclei.

OBS

lawrencium: named after Ernest Orlando Lawrence (1901-1958), the inventor of the cyclotron and the founder of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL, formerly the Radiation Laboratory) at Berkeley.

OBS

The symbol Lw was used at first, but it was changed to Lr in 1963.

DEF
