In many societies, individuals are permitted to marry again, often on the death of the first spouse or after divorce. Such monogamous marriage is termed as serial monogamy.

Si l'on regarde comment vivent nos plus proches cousins – chimpanzés, bonobos, gorilles –, on constate que la polygynie (un mâle avec plusieurs femelles) est plutôt de mise. Et certaines données ethnologiques montrent qu'elle a cours dans plus de 75 % des sociétés humaines actuelles ou passées; les autres pratiquent la monogamie séquentielle, qui est parfois considérée comme une polygamie différée.
