A method of climbing a slope on skis while, usually, bypassing an obstacle: from a standing position, skis perpendicular to the slope, the skier steps up with the uphill ski and then bring the downhill ski parallel to the uphill one, each step being made diagonally and zigzaguing, not in direct ascent.

Méthode pour gravir une pente en ski tout en contournant un obstacle ou évitant une trace directe trop raide : d'une position debout, skis en travers de la pente, le skieur fait un pas vers le haut de la pente de son ski amont puis ramène le ski aval parallèle au premier, chaque pas vers l'amont étant en avancé ou en reculé par rapport au précédent, et en zigzag plutôt qu'à angle droit (trace directe) par rapport à la pente.

Technique utilisée surtout en ski de fond, parfois en ski alpin.

Il faut distinguer entre «montée en demi-escalier» ou «montée en diagonale» et «montée en biais» : la montée en demi-escalier se fait dans un angle constant par rapport à la ligne de pente et laisse une trace d'escalier en diagonale, chaque «marche» étant perpendiculaire à la ligne de pente; la «montée en biais» zigzague de chaque côté de la ligne de pente et de la pente et allie la montée en traverse, le pas tournant, la conversion et la montée en ciseaux selon l'accentuation de la pente.
