La théorie harmonique donne le nom de pédale à une note tenue par l'une des parties pendant que les autres font entendre un enchaînement d'accords plus ou moins libres par rapport à elle. Cette dénomination s'explique par référence à l'orgue, le pédalier ayant surtout servi, primitivement, à faciliter de semblables tenues. La note de pédale se situe d'ordinaire à la basse, mais peut également apparaître aux parties médianes ou supérieures.
