If red cell fragmentation is the most striking abnormality on the blood smear of a patient with a high reticulocyte count, hemoglobinuria, and a poorly functioning aortic valve prosthesis, the morphologic changes strongly support the diagnosis of a traumatic hemolytic anemia.
