L'orientation d'une pièce est la direction vers laquelle est dirigée sa façade extérieure. Le problème de l'orientation des bâtiments se pose principalement aux longs blocs, où la rangée (ou les rangées) de pièces regardent vers deux directions différentes. L'orientation de tels bâtiments est la direction vers laquelle sont tournées ses façades, c'est-à-dire la direction perpendiculaire à l'axe des blocs.
