Each light organ [of Photuris] consists of a number of large cells, the photocytes, lying just beneath the epidermis and backed by several layers of cells called the dorsal layer cells .... The cuticle overlying the light organ is transparent. The photocytes are so arranged that they form cylinders running at right angles to the cuticle, and within each cylinder are tracheae and nerves.
