Phénomène par lequel un matériau transforme directement un rayonnement lumineux en mouvement mécanique.

CONT

La photostriction fait intervenir deux phénomènes : l'effet photovoltaïque, qui transforme l'énergie lumineuse en énergie électrique, et l'effet piézoélectrique, qui transforme cette dernière en énergie mécanique. Parmi les matériaux pouvant donner lieu à la photostriction, on trouve des céramiques, comme la PLZT, appelée ainsi parce qu'elle contient du plomb, du lanthane, du zirconium et du titane. La photostriction permettrait de simplifier les communications optiques en supprimant l'étape de conversion de la lumière en impulsions électriques.
