On avait déjà réussi à faire des matières plastiques avec des amidons riches en amylose. Le résultat était décevant : la matière était opaque et difficile à traiter. Mais les laboratoires Hayashibara ont utilisé une nouvelle souche, Pullularia pullulans, qui, cultivée sur de l'amidon, forme un triglucopdysaccharide. Comprimé, chauffé et traité en vapeur humide, il donne un matériau plastique ayant les propriétés des plastiques actuels. Ainsi vient d'être lancé, à petite échelle (5 000 tonnes en 1975) un dérivé plastique du Pullulan, transparent, résistant au froid, pouvant aussi bien se traiter en fibres ou en films qu'en moulages. Il ne contient pas de plastifiant toxique et résiste de -30° à +100 °. L'emploi de tels plastiques biologiques pourra s'étendre progressivement à partir d'usages très spécifiques. 1, record 1, French, - plastique%20biologique
