Le nombre de MacIlwain correspondant est infini, et il en est de même de l'invariant longitudinal pour toute particule dont le centre-guide glisse sur cette ligne de force. Nous nommerons ces points «pôles d'invariant», réservant le nom de «pôles géomagnétiques» aux points où l'axe géomagnétique perce la surface du globe et celui de «pôles d'inclinaison» aux points où le champ réel est vertical.
